Chapter 1243 — The New Four Young Masters of Songshan
"Very good, Mr. Lin." Qing Bo nodded. There was no need to tell Qing Bo which way to go; to a man as intimate with the map of Songshan City as he was, he was a living navigation system in himself.
Wei Zhao called Tang Yun. "Yun-yun, today I'm coming to pick you up in Qing Bo's car. Just get yourself ready to head out."
"Qing Bo's car? Then I'll wait for you both at the stop by the compound gate. Qing Bo's car is rather large, and it's hard to drive it inside the compound. These days plenty of families are piling their renovation debris on the roads in there." Tang Yun thought for a moment before she spoke.
"That works too. We'll meet at the stop by the compound gate, then." Wei Zhao nodded without pressing the point. He had noticed as much the day before, when he drove Tang Yun home: many residents had heaped their renovation waste on the roads inside the compound and had yet to have it hauled away, which made passage quite difficult. A small car could still manage, but a large one was bound to scrape against something.
Tang Yun hung up, picked up her schoolbag and made to go downstairs, but Mother Tang came after her. "Yun-yun, was that Xiao Yi on the phone?"
"Mm..." Tang Yun answered.
"I made braised chicken drumsticks. Take him a box to try, will you? He wasn't here for our housewarming dinner, so let's call it making up for it?" Mother Tang brought over the lunchbox she had prepared and handed it to Tang Yun.
"All right..." Tang Yun thought about it, and in the end took it. She had been eating in the school cafeteria lately, but since she had a private room, bringing a dish of her own was no trouble at all.
Carrying the lunchbox, she arrived at the stop by the compound gate and waited quietly for Wei Zhao to come.
Days spent waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up and take her to school together — the Tang Yun of the past would never have dared even to imagine such a thing!
Dating in her senior year of high school? How could that possibly be?
Yet now, day after day, Tang Yun simply took it as it came, accepting it gladly.
The boy-girl ties she had once thought so shameless had now turned unbearably sweet.
Tang Yun found that her own frame of mind had truly changed.
The road and the bus stop at the compound gate were newly built, immaculate and lovely. Gazing at the scene before her, Tang Yun would never have imagined that she could move out of the shantytown into so upscale a neighborhood.
She wondered how her old neighbors in the shantytown were faring now. But thanks to Wei Zhao's intervention, those residents had finally wrung their generous relocation compensation out of Zhao Qibing — which counted as the last good turn Tang Yun had done for them.
The road ahead was theirs to walk now. She could help them for a time, but not for a lifetime — and besides, she could hardly keep troubling Wei Zhao.
"Hey there, beautiful. Waiting for a bus? How about I give you a lift?" A black Ferrari sports car pulled up in front of Tang Yun. Behind its window sat a young man of the rich-kid sort, hair slicked back and face powdered, his eyes roving over Tang Yun with a thievish glint.
Zhao Fafa was one of the homeowners in Changxiang Garden too. His old man was a construction contractor, and Changxiang Garden had been built by his father's company; so in Changxiang Garden, Zhao Fafa's father Zhao Guangsi also kept a house. As a twentieth-birthday gift for Zhao Fafa, Zhao Guangsi had given him a villa, right there inside Changxiang Garden.
With his car and his house, Zhao Fafa — though his name hung on some university's rolls — in truth did nothing all day but eat, drink and play, running with a pack of fair-weather friends, and together they had crowned themselves the New Four Young Masters of Songshan! The old Four Young Masters of Songshan had been out of the picture for years, so Zhao Fafa and his cronies had conferred the title upon themselves.
Of course, there was a reason Zhao Fafa had been so restless lately, and had named himself the head of the New Four Young Masters of Songshan! When his father Zhao Guangsi was clearing out their old house, he had come upon a genealogy of the Zhao clan. By its reckoning he recognized a branch of kin — a cousin and an uncle — and that branch was exceedingly formidable. So Zhao Guangsi had shot up in the world overnight, making the acquaintance of one social notable after another, and his company's business had suddenly expanded by no small measure!
And so Zhao Fafa had grown cocky along with him, feeling that he had now all but become a scion of a distinguished house, one of the leading young figures of the new generation in Songshan City!
His ego swelling, Zhao Fafa drove out of Changxiang Garden, and the moment he cleared the gate he spotted a pretty girl on the bus platform by the compound entrance, slender of figure and bright of face, and his heart was stirred at once.
But Zhao Fafa was a man with an eye for things as well. Only after studying Tang Yun carefully for a while did he drive over to strike up a conversation.
In his view, the clothes Tang Yun wore were a school uniform, so she must belong to the sort of family that was not especially well off; and she was carrying a lunchbox in her hand — how many students with money still brought their own meals these days?
And then look at where she was standing now: a public bus stop! That meant she must be waiting for a bus here.
If her family had money, then naturally there would be a car to ferry her to and fro, or she would drive herself; at the very least she would take a taxi to school. Waiting for a bus here said everything about Tang Yun's family circumstances.
So, all things considered, Zhao Fafa concluded that winning Tang Yun over should not be difficult. A girl who had never seen the world would lose her head the moment a little money came her way.
Tang Yun glanced at Zhao Fafa in the Ferrari and made no reply.
She had not run into such a situation in a long while, though back in the shantytown she had met with plenty of it. That scoundrel Li Erlan had pestered her often enough — only after Wei Zhao gave him a sound thrashing did he no longer dare make trouble.
"Hey, beautiful, in a hurry to get to school? Let me take you — I've nothing on anyway! Don't be afraid, I live in this compound too, over on the villa side. Look, I've even got the villa-zone pass right here!" With that, Zhao Fafa waved the compound pass inside the car at Tang Yun, indirectly showing her that he was no bad man, but her neighbor!
In this money-driven society, shot through with material desire, plenty of girls were vain, and Zhao Fafa had met all too many of them.
So as Zhao Fafa saw it, now that he had flashed his luxury car and his mansion, this little miss before him would rise to the bait if she had even a hint of vanity in her!
After all, even if nothing came of it between them, getting to ride a Ferrari to school was enough to furnish her with bragging rights to boast of before her classmates! And Zhao Fafa enjoyed the sport of the chase; the first time he would reveal nothing. Yet in his view, this sort of thing happened once, then twice, then a third time — and as the two met more and more often, few could keep from taking the bait.
Tang Yun frowned. She had thought that if she paid him no heed, he would stop pestering her — after all, judging by this man with his fine car and his mansion, he did not seem the sort of street ruffian that Li Erlan or Zou Ruoming was. He ought to be a young master of some standing, and not so shameless as that.
