Chapter 1029 — An Outrageous Wish
Yes, everyone has dreams in childhood... only, as the years pass, those dreams gradually wither away...
What had his own dream been, back then?
A peasant woman? A mountain spring? A little patch of farmland?
Yes, Wei Zhao's dream back then had been very simple. As a child, when he was with the old man, he had never imagined he would grow up to be a killer, nor had he given a thought to what kind of life lay ahead of him...
At the time he had assumed he would be like the other village children around him—Er Goudan, for instance—working the fields together and gathering wild produce from the hills to support a family...
But later, once Wei Zhao had grown old enough to understand things, he began carrying out all sorts of missions, simple and complex alike... and he knew even less where his own dream had gone.
That rootless, drifting life was all he had. On the rare occasions when he was idle, chatting and shooting the breeze with Er Goudan back in his hometown counted as the most leisurely moments of his life.
As the years rolled on, he grew up, and Er Goudan grew up too.
His own fate had been changed by the old man; he was destined never to become a farmer. And Er Goudan's fate had been changed because of him—destined never to be an ordinary farmer... and yet bound to stay in his hometown as one!
Thinking of Er Goudan, Wei Zhao found that he rather missed him. He hadn't seen him for a while now, and he wondered whether the spring plowing was finished yet. It should be about done by now, surely? He would find the time to give him a call and have him come to Songshan City...
And so the life Wei Zhao was living now could be called the most leisurely stretch of time he'd had outside of childhood: food to eat, drink to drink, a beauty at his side. Danger lurked everywhere and crises pressed in from all sides, yet Wei Zhao relished every moment of it.
Even so, Wei Zhao still felt his life was better than Feng Xiaoxiao's! His fate might be adrift and uncertain, but he had a friend in Er Goudan. Er Goudan was a bit slow, a bit reckless in how he did things, but he suited Wei Zhao's temperament perfectly.
At least he was a man of genuine feeling. Whatever Wei Zhao told him, he would only chuckle, and he would never breathe a word of it to anyone else.
So Wei Zhao never hid the experiences of those years from Er Goudan, and Er Goudan was a most faithful listener.
Shaking his head, Wei Zhao suddenly remembered that he was running short on time—class was already over, and here he was reading Feng Xiaoxiao's wishes with his mind wandering off!
Not daring to dawdle, Wei Zhao quickly photographed and recorded this wish of Feng Xiaoxiao's, then closed it and went on to read the next one.
"I want to be in love, just once, with a boyfriend who cares for me and cherishes me. When I see other couples in their moonlit, flower-scented romance, I envy them so much... but I can't do that to anyone! I'm going to die, and the one I love would be heartbroken!"
This wish, however, came in two parts: the words above had been written on a date two years ago, and beneath them there was another annotation, dated very recently!
"I've made up my mind—I'm going to be in love with Wei Zhao! Who told him to douse me with pee and set off firecrackers on my butt? I'll have my revenge! I'll make him fall in love with me, and then I'll die right in front of him and break his heart! Come on, Xiaoxiao, you can do it!"
Reading this, Wei Zhao broke out in a sweat. No way? He had felt before that something was off about Feng Xiaoxiao—going from hostility to affection was a bit too abrupt a shift, wasn't it? He looked at the date on the annotation: it was written on the very day Feng Xiaoxiao had changed toward him...
Except that beneath this annotation there was yet another one, and when Wei Zhao read it, he could not help but heave a sigh.
"So this is what love feels like? It's wonderful. I really wish I could go on living forever..."
The date on this annotation was last night, and reading it, Wei Zhao's heart was heavy beyond doubt.
The meaning of this annotation was plain enough: Feng Xiaoxiao had started out with thoughts of revenge, and now she was changing... She wanted to keep on living—so what did revenge have to do with anything anymore?
Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. Feng Xiaoxiao's pretense had turned real, most likely.
But this particular wish counted as one in the process of coming true—nearly fulfilled already—and there was no need for Wei Zhao to agonize over it any longer.
Whatever Feng Xiaoxiao's original purpose in liking him, Wei Zhao could understand and forgive it. In fact, thinking carefully about her background and her nature, he did not blame her for going so far in the beginning.
Consider: if it had been Shen Yushu, never mind firecrackers on her backside—if someone had poured pee over her head, she would have gone berserk and fought to the bitter end.
And yet Feng Xiaoxiao had chosen a strategy that cost her eight hundred to kill a thousand: to fall in love with Wei Zhao, to make him love her, only to take herself away from him. In truth, this was no revenge at all—it was one last indulgence granted to the final days of her life...
Wei Zhao closed this wish and read on to the next.
"Today I watched a TV show where the hero and heroine watched the sunrise together by the sea and cooked breakfast with seawater. How romantic! I want that too... but I want a fried egg!"
Reading this rather outlandish wish of Feng Xiaoxiao's, Wei Zhao could not help finding it somewhat amusing. A fried egg? Eating a fried egg while watching the sunrise? Somehow it did not pair well at all. But since it was Feng Xiaoxiao's wish, he photographed it with his phone all the same—this one, after all, would be relatively easy to grant.
There was not much time left. Wei Zhao closed this wish and hurriedly read the next.
"Xu Shilan is so beautiful! If only I were a boy, I could push her down..."
Wei Zhao had barely opened this wish of Feng Xiaoxiao's when he was struck so hard he felt scorched crisp outside and tender within. This wish—he didn't seem able to grant it, unless he sent Feng Xiaoxiao off for a sex-change operation?
This, however, was only the first half of the sentence; there was more to come, and Wei Zhao read on.
"I've decided: I'll hand this difficult task to my boyfriend. I'll have my boyfriend push her down, and then the three of us can have a threesome... hahaha... Xiaoxiao, you're a genius of the highest order! Though I suppose it's just a daydream?"
After reading the second half, Wei Zhao nearly flung Feng Xiaoxiao's phone away... Wasn't that a bit ruthless? He became more and more convinced that if Feng Xiaoxiao did not die, she and Shen Yushu would surely get along famously—from a certain angle, the two had a great deal in common, and their ideas were equally outrageous.
Still, Wei Zhao photographed this wish of Feng Xiaoxiao's too. Mm, when he got the chance he would ask that big star named Xu Shilan whether she was into girls. If she was, then this wish of Feng Xiaoxiao's could still be fulfilled!
